Without a doubt, Thrashin is a very good album. It’s composed of eleven titles, throughout almost all of which the guitar is 100% grunge. But Total Slacker can’t be reduced to just that. With superb mid-fi production just the way we like it, Total Slacker’s songs seem to fit right into the 90s. Yet this time it’s not just another revival gimmick; this is a sincere approach. Songs such as “Suck in ‘93” remind us of how cool it was to play Sega while drinking Crystal Pepsi, or “These Condos Don’t Belong” that comment on the mass gentrification of Williamsburg.
“Psychic Mesa”, the introductory song, is absolutely monumental. It would be difficult to explain just how much I love each second after 3min05. “Magical Date Night” is a song that insists Total Slacker is evolving in another genre that suits them well. “No Mo 4Loko” brings back the heavy sound of grunge guitar. Could Nirvana have written it? Without a doubt. The last song of the album, “Koolz McRulez”, lasting almost 8 minutes, ranges from the psychedelic, a la Tame Impala, to the power rock of Pond. The fuzz is extreme. In short, Total Slacker is one of those few bands that truly deserve to be exposed to the light of day. They’re a secret too big to keep.
