Maxshh – Bonus Flowers

EN: What an album! I didn’t know Maxshh until a few weeks ago, but his unique formula now makes me think that I’ll have a hard time parting with him. If his dry guitar is very folk, he adds experimental, punk, noisy phases, which is breathtaking. “The Sone and I and Everybody” is a fantastic example. The voice oscillates between murmuring and anger; in short, Maxshh loves Neutral Milk Hotel as much as the noisy scene of the nineties. It is excellent, in line with my Flippin’ Freaks friends.
FR: Quel album ! Je ne connaissais pas Maxshh il y a encore quelques semaines de cela, mais sa formule unique au monde me fait désormais penser que j’aurai du mal à m’en séparer. Si sa guitare sèche est très folk, il ajoute des phases expérimentales, punk, noisy, qui est à couper le souffle. Preuve en est avec le premier morceau, “The Sone and I and Everybody“. La voix alterne entre murmures et colères toujours maitrisées, bref, Maxshh aime Neutral Milk Hotel autant que la scène noisy des nineties. C’est excellent, dans la lignée des amis de Flippin’ Freaks.

EN: I remember Lulu’s. It was a bar in Brooklyn that closed in 2014 or so. We used to drink good beers there, in this old shed. And then, with every beer ordered, we got a ticket for free pizza. That was the deal, my HQ. One evening, I was with a friend, we were coming out of a Beat Happening concert. I didn’t like it; the light was too white, he sang out of tune, and he wore a lawyer’s shirt. We were going to Lulu’s, and on a losing bet, she had to say, “Calvin Johnson sucks”. A few years later, in 2021, I’d like her to say, “those who don’t like Calvin Johnson suck”.
FR: Je me revois à Lulu’s. C’était un bar de Brooklyn qui a fermé ses portes en 2014 environ. On y buvait de la bonne bière dans cet ancien hangar. Et puis, à chaque bière commandée, on avait droit à un ticket pour une pizza gratuite. C’était le deal, mon QG. Un soir, j’étais avec une amie, nous sortions d’un concert de Beat Happening. Je n’avais pas aimé, la lumière était trop blanche, il chantait faux, et il portait une chemise d’avocat. Nous allions à Lulu’s, et, à la suite d’un pari perdu, elle devait dire “Calvin Johnson sucks”. Elle s’exécutait ; j’exultais. Quelques années plus tard, en 2021, j’aimerais lui faire dire : “those who don’t like Calvin Johnson suck”.

Eugh – The Most Brilliant Man Alive

EN: Eugh is an Australian band that likes egg punk, and does it well. They released The Most Brilliant Man Alive last year, and since then, they have decided to keep up a good pace. His tracks do everything the genre can achieve: they are cyborg, fast, and fluorescent. Fans of egg-punk will enjoy this B-movie style interpretation of a genre that is on everyone’s lips.
FR: Eugh, c’est un groupe australien qui aime le egg punk, et qui le fait bien. Il a fait paraître The Most Brilliant Man Alive l’an dernier, et, depuis, il semble s’être décidé à ne pas baisser le rythme. Ses titres font tout ce que peut atteindre du genre : ils sont cyborgs, rapides, et fluorescents. Les amateurs du genre se délecteront de cette interprétation façon “série B” d’un genre qui est sur toutes les bouches.

PACKS – Drink Rain

EN: I was talking about Packs a few weeks ago. It seems that this Canadian artist is brought to produce beautiful things. Her cover of Iceage, “Drink Rain”, is a great example of her consistency. More than that, this cover is an opportunity to confront the listener with the “Packs touch”. Too few artists know how to distinguish themselves from others in a matter of seconds. Packs is one of them.
FR: Je vous parlais de Packs il y a quelques semaines déjà. Il semblerait bien que cette artiste canadienne soit amenée à produire de belles choses underground. Sa cover de Iceage, “Drink Rain”, est un bel exemple de sa régularité. Plus encore, cette reprise est l’occasion de confronter l’auditeur à la touche Packs. Trop peu d’artistes savent de distinguer des autres en quelques secondes à peine. Packs en est.
