Dumb is the author of Seeing Green (2018) and Club Nites (2019), two of the 2010s best albums. This comes with great responsibility, and made me nervous to listen to Pray 4 Tomorrow (2022). Was the band going to thicken its perfect discography or was it going to dilute itself, like many others, in a mix of “it’s still us but we’ve changed the music a bit”? True to its name, Dumb didn’t ask any questions: it rushed in the direction it thought was the best: post-skate. And so here’s my take in just three words:

➝ Dichotomous: there is a clear lack of restraint on this new LP, as evidence by the second and third tracks. We have always known Dumb for its very sharp, cathartic songs. While it still has choppy rhythms, Dumb adds longer instrumental phases, probably informed by its experience on stage. It’s good; very good!

➝ Universalism: in a post-slacker world the fashion is to pity ourselves, Dumb continues to celebrate partying. As Franco (the singer) once said to me, “I like beer and pizza and don’t see anything wrong with writing songs about pizza or beer.” The bands that only seek to pass on their communitarian message are starting to annoy me. Dumb celebrates universalism with its sense of fiesta.

➝ Concept: Pray 4 Tomorrow — almost — plays the concept album card. The tracks follow each other in what often has the effect of a long ramp. Don’t be fooled by the jacket that shows 18 tracks. Dumb offers four or five Grand 8 experiences.

In short, Pray 4 Tomorrow is one of the very best albums of 2022. It’s faultless.

Dumb, c’est l’auteur de Seeing Green (2018) et Club Nites (2019), deux albums qui ont marqué la décennie dernière. Je ne pouvais que trembler à l’écoute de son nouvel LP, Pray 4 Tomorrow (2022). Le groupe allait-il épaissir sa discographie parfaite ou allait-il, comme beaucoup, se diluer dans un mélange de “c’est toujours nous mais on a quand même un peu changé la musique histoire de ne pas sortir le même album”. Fidèle à son p’tit nom à lui, Dumb ne s’est pas posé de questions : il a foncé dans la direction qu’il pensait être la meilleure : le post-skate. Voici donc son nouvel LP en trois points seulement.

➝ Dichotomique : il y a un clair lâcher-prise sur ce nouvel LP, j’en veux pour preuve les deuxième et troisième morceaux. On a toujours connu Dumb pour ses morceaux très sharp, cathartiques. S’il nous embarque toujours avec ses rythmes saccadés, il ajoute de plus longues phases instrumentales, probablement informé par son expérience de la scène. C’est fort ; c’est très fort !

➝ Universalisme : dans un monde post-slacker où l’heure à s’apitoyer, Dumb continue de célébrer la fête. Le chanteur, Franco, me confiait “I like beer and pizza and don’t see anything wrong with writing songs about pizza or beer” lors de notre interview. A la bonheur, les groupes qui ne cherchent qu’à faire passer leur message communautariste commencent à taper sur les nerfs. Dumb célèbre l’universalisme avec son sens de la fiesta.

➝ Concept : Pray 4 Tomorrow joue — presque — la carte du concept album. Les morceaux s’enchainent dans ce qui fait souvent l’effet d’une longue rampe. Ne vous laissez pas tromper par la maquette qui indique 18 titres. Dumb nous offre ici 4 ou 5 expériences Grand 8.

Bref, Pray 4 Tomorrow, c’est l’un des tout meilleurs albums de 2022. Il perpétue le sans-faute d’un groupe en passe de devenir mythique.
